Round Square International Service Project begins in India

We are delighted to share that our Round Square International Service (RSIS) project team has safely arrived in India and is now settled into their accommodation, ready to embark on an enriching experience of service, cultural exchange, and personal growth.

RSIS projects bring together students from Round Square member schools and, in some cases, partner schools around the world to work collaboratively on meaningful service initiatives. These projects aim not only to provide practical support to communities in need but also to foster leadership, teamwork, and international understanding among participating students.

After a long train journey, the students made the most of their time together, getting to know one another, building connections across countries, and meeting individually with their adult leaders. Upon arrival, the team received a wonderfully warm welcome, followed by an excellent first dinner featuring noodles, paneer curry, mutton, rice, Indian breads, and a well-earned gulab jamun dessert.

The evening continued with Baraza discussions, a key RSIS tradition that encourages reflection, dialogue, and group decision-making. The team began with a circle of gratitude and engaged in ice-breakers and team-building activities. Each Baraza group then chose meaningful names for the week:

  • GIRKA – representing the group’s home countries: Germany, Ireland, Kenya, India, Australia
  • Kuchanganya – a Swahili word meaning mixing, mingling, and working together
  • Mana – symbolising the life energy that flows through all things
  • Factorial – inspired by the multiplying effect of helping a community grow its own strengths

Today marks their first full day on the construction site. After morning briefings covering the Code of Conduct, medical protocols, and risk management, the Baraza groups explored the themes of adventure, risk, and stepping outside one’s comfort zone responsibly—core elements of the RSIS experience.

Through these projects, students not only contribute to meaningful community development but also gain a deeper understanding of diverse cultures, develop leadership skills, and build lifelong friendships.
