A King Constantine Medal Story – Suhaani Sriram, The Shri Ram School, Aravali
King Constantine Medal 2025: Suhaani Sriram, The Shri Ram School, Aravali, India.
The Shri Ram School, Aravali in India is proud to announce that Suhaani Sriram has been awarded the King Constantine Medal 2025 for her work creating a smart temperature and humidity measuring device, designed to predict potential flooding. Suhaani tells us what receiving the medal means to her:
For the past five years, my condominium of over 234 homes in Gurugram, India, has faced a recurring nightmare every monsoon. Each year, torrential rainwater would flood into our community, seeping into lobbies, damaging property, and disrupting daily life. I remember wading through nearly three feet of murky water just to reach my front door, feeling helpless despite the presence of water pumps and flood drains that never seemed to keep up.
It was this sense of helplessness—not just mine, but shared by every family around me—that sparked FloodGuard. I wanted to build something that could predict flooding before it happened, giving people time to act instead of react. The idea was simple enough: a smart device that monitored temperature and humidity, analyzed weather patterns linked to past flooding events, and warned residents when danger was near.
But turning that idea into reality was anything but simple. I struggled with Arduino code for weeks, trying to translate my vision into something tangible. I broke the code into small pieces—the ‘if’ loops, the humidity alarm thresholds—and ran countless iterations until the sensor finally did what I imagined it could. Then came the challenge of fitting all that wiring and processing power into a compact, waterproof unit. I eventually repurposed an old plastic box, turning it into a vessel for FloodGuard’s circuitry. It wasn’t perfect, but it worked.
The first time the alarm sounded ahead of a flood event, warning my neighbors in time to protect their homes, I felt something shift. FloodGuard wasn’t just a device anymore—it was a lifeline for 234 households, and a proof of what determination could do.
I went on to demonstrate FloodGuard to local government leaders, hoping to expand its reach to more communities like mine. I built a website, FloodGuard.co.in, to connect directly with anyone in need of this solution. What started as a desperate attempt to protect my own home is now slowly evolving into a tool that could safeguard many more.
Receiving the King Constantine Medal is a great honour. I now aspire to continue my journey to improve the infrastructure in my city as extreme weather events grow more frequent. Receiving this honour further validated FloodGuard allowing me to reach a wider audience of users through the global platform that being a King Constantine Medalist provides.
